WOW Gold - Blizzard May Consider Dropping Subscription Model for WOW

World of Warcraft is the clear king of the MMORPGs, but Blizzard is keeping a close eye on the free-to-play competition and considering it as a possibility for the future. Lead designer Tom Chilton talked about the influx of MMOs that have either started as "freemium" or switched to the model after launch.
"I feel like they're doing that to compete with other games that are on a similar subscriber level to what they were at," he said. "I imagine that when one of them went free to play it cannibalized some of the other subscribers. I can definitely imagine that being the case with World of Warcraft. If another game comes along and blows us away it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee, or even further down the line, when we have another MMO out."
It's not something Chilton sees happening anytime soon. "We're not spending a lot of time thinking about it," he said. "It's not something that's a reality for us in the near future." Right now the company is enjoying the best of both worlds, standing at 11 million paying subscribers (which it hopes to increase with Cataclysm), while also making money from extras like fancy horses.
